CALVERLEY, KATHLEEN J. "KATHIE" ( - )
First published in the Daily News on Jan 7, 2026Kathleen Jane Calverley, age 89, of Vestaburg, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 1, 2026. The daughter of Joseph Henry & Kathleen Monica (Farrar) Moore, she was born on June 19, 1936 in South Fork, Pennsylvania.
She graduated from St. Mary’s of Royal Oak, and on December 15, 1954, in Berkley, she married Robert Francis Calverley, and together she and Bob enjoyed over sixty-three years of marriage and raised four children. Kathie was an integral piece to their successful heating and cooling business, and she lived a beautiful life grounded in faith and love.
Outside of her homemaking, she was an administrative assistant at the Edmore Hospital, had been a youth leader, and built many lasting friendships with the Vestaburg Book Club. Above all else, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren were her most prized treasures.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph & Kathleen Moore; her husband, Bob Calverley; two brothers, Joe Moore and Denny Moore; and son-in-law, Tommy Fox.
Surviving is her sister, Marianne Lange of Coral Springs, Florida; daughter, Kathleen Fox of San Mateo, Florida; three sons, Bob & Mary Beth Calverley of Riverdale, Bill & Tonyia Calverley of Ovid, and Dan & Patti Calverley of Vestaburg; eleven grandchildren, Steven, David & Crystal, Luke & Sammie, Jessi & Jeremy, Nick, Tonisha & Troy, Katie & Eric, Haley & Kyle, Abby & Caleb, Cassie & Eric, and Jack & Julia; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family is from 10-11 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026 at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, 168 E. Wright Avenue, Shepherd, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Burial will take place privately at Richland Township Cemetery, Vestaburg.

Sheryl Kay (Wittenbach) Fagerlin, age 81, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Rockford, Michigan.
Sheryl was born September 22, 1944, in Belding, Michigan, to Kenneth and Doris (Johnson) Wittenbach. She graduated from Belding High School in 1962.
While raising her three children, Sheryl also helped with bookkeeping and account management for Wonderland Ice. When her youngest child, Angie, went to college, Sheryl enrolled at Montcalm Community College to train as a medical transcriptionist. She went on to work at United Memorial Hospital (later Spectrum Hospital) in Greenville for many years.
Sheryl had a creative spirit and a keen eye for beauty. She loved to paint and took classes with friends for many years, selling her artwork at local fairs and gifting pieces to loved ones. She also had a passion for antiquing and treasure-hunting at garage sales and flea markets. Nothing made her happier than finding a bargain that she could resell for a profit! Her “Shabby Chic Market,” held in her front yard during Belding’s Labor Day festival, became a beloved tradition, often supported by her lifelong friends Karen Ware and Aileen Carson. Later in life, she was often found working on Sudoku puzzles, often with her grandchildren. Throughout her life, she found great comfort in her church and in God. Her trust in God was a steady source of strength, especially in her later years.
Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her siblings Tom Wittenbach and Betsy Lillie. She is also survived by her three children: Kimberly Long (Timothy) of Ada, Michigan; Pat Fagerlin (Trisha) of Rockford, Michigan; and Angie Fagerlin (Tony) of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Sheryl adored her 9 grandchildren and was a tremendous grandmother to Emily Long Birney (John), Abigail Lavoie (Patrick), Ellen Long, and Jack (Ryann) Long; Joshua Fagerlin (Kelsey) and Zachary Fagerlin; and Nathaniel, Lincoln, and Theodore Tsai. She enjoyed recently becoming a great-grandmother to Thomas Fagerlin and Jack Birney.
Sheryl’s kindness, laughter, and faith in God will be dearly missed by all who loved her. The funeral honoring her will be held on Saturday, January 24th at 2:00 p.m. at Verdun Funeral Home (303 S Bridge St, Belding) with Pastor Than Johnson officiating. The family will greet visitors for an hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to the Alvah N. Joyce Maxine Habel of Greenville MI age 84 passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 7, 2026. She was born on November 26, 1941, and grew up to become a dedicated sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was the owner of DJ's restaurant along with her husband of 54 loving years, Dennis Habel.
Joyce could be found traveling the state to different flea markets. She also enjoyed sewing in her free time and could often be found leading a sewing class in the basement of her home.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Habel; her children, Brenda (Mark) Cole and Dave (Mary) Butler; 5 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Bob (Sally)Habel, Rick (Kathy) Habel, and Ray Smith; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Blanche Blow; her daughter, Dianna Habel; her sister-in-law, Carol Smith; and her father and mother in-law, Don and Flossie Habel.
There will be no funeral or visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Age 88, of Carson City, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026, at her home with family by her side. Gail was born July 4, 1937, in Detroit, the daughter of John and Margaret (Conway) Marnon. She graduated from Visitation Catholic High School with the class of 1955. Gail married John A. Kennedy on Feb. 11, 1956, at Visitation Catholic Church in Detroit. She was a proud homemaker and later worked as a CNA for local nursing homes. Gail enjoyed quilting, sewing, crafting, cooking, baking and was well known for her delicious soups. She was a very dedicated member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Carson City. Gail would give her time and talent whenever Nancy needed help. She visited the sick and shut-ins of our area. She was a member of the Altar Society and gave out the Holy Eucharist for many Masses. She is survived by her children Kevin Kennedy, Debbie (Ray) Harwood, Karen (Dennis) Wiand, Teri (Rod) Middleton, Kelly (Kurt) Keiffer, Ken (Bonnie) Kennedy, Dennis Kennedy, honorary son Eddie Sims, grandchildren Taylor, Claire, Justin, Christopher, Bryce, Zachary, Hannah and Dylan, great grandchildren Connor, Owen, Townes, Lowe, Magnolia Joy, Kellan, Jackson, Madison, siblings Edward (Terrie) Marnon, Rosemary Cavanaugh, Donna (John) Arquette and many nieces and nephews. Gail was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, granddaughter Kelsey and brothers Albert, Joe, Richard, Phillip, Don and Barney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 12, 2026, at 11 am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Carson City. Interment will follow in Maryknoll Cemetery, Carson City. Visitation will be held on Monday from 10 am until time of Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Carson City Food Bank or for Masses said in Gail’s memory. Donald A. Peterman, 77, of White Cloud, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 2, 1948, in Greenville, Michigan, the son of Lawrence and Elsie (Moffett) Peterman. After graduating from high school, Donald volunteered for service and joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam era. Following his active duty, he continued his service with the Michigan Army National Guard.
Donald was a proud and active member of American Legion Post No. 98 in Big Rapids, AMVETS Post 1941 of Big Rapids, as well as the Eagles and the VFW. He was self-employed as a mechanic and was happiest in the garage, especially when working on his hot rods and his beloved El Camino. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and baseball.
Donald was known as a strong, realistic man who was bold, funny, and unapologetically honest—he truly had no filter. He was loyal, dedicated, and immensely proud, especially of his family, whom he loved with his whole heart. To his grandchildren and children alike, he was affectionately known as "Popps."
He is survived by his son, Jeff Peterman (Tasha); daughters, Holly (Bruce) Thomas, and Brandi Peterman; grandchildren, Joshua Peterman, Hannah (Robbie) Poore, Leah Peterman, Alexzandra Plotts, Brooke and Nick Thomas, Mallory Heart, Morgan and Benjamin Booher, Macie, and Bailey; great-grandchildren, Henry and Robbie Poore and Walker Plotts; nephews, Tom and Howard Baldwin; nieces, Gail (Rick) Rynard and Dawn (Terry) Satours; nephews Duane (Kim) Peterman, Tim (Karen) Peterman, and Darren (Tina) Peterman; along with many other nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Shorty.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pastor Finn officiating. The family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Donald will be laid to rest in the spring of 2026 at Goodwell Township Cemetery, with full military honors under the auspices of AMVETS Post 1941 and American Legion Post No. 98.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to AMVETS Post 1941 or American Legion Post No. 98, both of Big Rapids. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
Carol Jo (Smith) Zimmerman, age 78, of Fayetteville, GA, passed away on December 31, 2025.
Carol was born on December 22, 1947, in Greenville, Michigan, to Hermine (Conklin) Smith and Willard Byron Smith. She grew up on a farm where she learned the value of hard work alongside her three brothers. Competitive by nature, she carried that spirit throughout her life.
Carol was fun, athletic, and mischievous. She regularly went to the gym and stayed active. She had a creative side as well, writing humorous poems that reflected her wit and personality. Carol was known for generosity, kindness, caring nature, and deep appreciation for those around her.
She is survived by her partner, Ed Lis; her brother, Robert (Margaret) Smith; her sister-in-law, Brenda Smith; along with cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hermine and Willard Smith, and her brothers Richard Smith and Ronald Smith.
Carol will be fondly remembered and forever irreplaceable.
